Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and its eruptions attract significant attention from both volcanology enthusiasts and tourists eager to witness such a spectacular phenomenon.
On February 8, 2025, Mount Etna began a new phase of subterminal eruptive activity. On February 8, 2025, a subterminal eruption began on Mount Etna. It was primarily effusive but also featured Strombolian activity at the Southeast Crater, along with some lava overflows. The lava flow, fed by vents at an altitude of 3,050 m a.s.l., spread southwest, primarily covering desert areas and marginally affecting a small forest between 1,900 and 1,800 m a.s.l.

In summary, from February 7th until March 2nd—the day the eruption concluded—the volcanic tremor amplitude fluctuated, showing a trend of progressive increases and decreases, particularly in the final days. On the morning of February 7th, small Strombolian explosions were recorded at the Southeast Crater, followed by the opening of a fissure on its southwestern flank, which initiated the eruption. The eruption was characterized by both effusive and explosive activity, featuring emissions of ash and lapilli.
As is common with such events, the eruption lasted several weeks, altering the surrounding landscape and creating breathtaking scenery, while also posing safety risks, especially in areas closest to the craters and the lava front.
The standing advice is always to approach for a safe observation of eruptive phenomena only when accompanied by authorized Alpine and/or Volcanological guides.
