Carved by lava over thousands of years, these natural cavities offer a unique insight into the volcano\u2019s eruptive activity and tell its history with surprising detail.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are volcanic caves?<\/strong><br\/>Mount Etna\u2019s caves, or more technically &#8220;lava tubes,&#8221; are formed during effusive eruptions when the outer part of a lava flow cools and solidifies, while the still-hot interior continues to flow. When the internal lava drains away, it leaves behind a natural tunnel.<br\/><br\/><strong>Mount Etna&#8217;s most famous caves:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Grotta Cassone, Grotta delle Palombe, and many others can be visited on guided excursions equipped with helmets and lighting.<br\/>Why visit them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the geological aspect, these cavities represent an ideal habitat for several endemic invertebrates and also reveal the history of human-volcano interaction: many were used as shelters, snow deposits (neviere), or even as places of worship.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safety and accessibility<\/strong><br\/>Visits to volcanic caves must always be conducted with an expert guide and proper equipment (helmet, torch, trekking shoes).
